Has anyone ever seen aikido being used successfully against a real opponent in a real fight?
There has been tons of controversy about whether or not aikido is effective in a real life situation, which is why I am asking this. To be honest the only aikido I’ve ever seen is in movies (where everything is obviously choreographed) or in aikido practices & demonstrations, where the opponents are trained to attack in certain ways (which are also arguably unrealistic). I mean, no typical opponent who confronts you in a street fight is going to attack you with an overhead karate chop like I’ve seen in a Aikido demonstration. So I’m wondering, has anyone actually witnessed aikido being used successfully in a real life situation? Was anyone actually able to defend them-self against an attacker using aikido? Or is aikido better for exercise and demonstration purposes only?

yes i have and yes it is effective.
Yes I have, and it works just fine
i do Hapkido, which is a korean version of aikido with hard-style elements. aikido and hapkido come from the same roots and have many identical moves. just last month, a bum assaulted me by grabbing my wrist. i quickly used a hapkido wrist manipulation and arm lock, and then swung an elbow strike to his neck, stopping just before i made contact. he got the idea and backed off.
hapkido and aikido are not just for defense against karate chops. there are also techniques for kicks, punches, tackles, etc. it is MUCH more difficult and requires MUCH longer training to become sufficiently skilled in joint locks and manipulations than it is to learn how to defend yourself with boxing, but when you reach the higher levels and are able to perform the techniques properly, they are extremely effective. because it takes so much longer to reach that level though, you don’t see many people using it in a street fight. if you CAN’T intercept a fist and turn it into an elbow lock, it makes much more sense just to dodge and counter-punch.
Here’s a video of aikido being used outside the pre-arranged attack.
yes i have, it works great for me.
if you cant get a style or move to work the fault is yours or your instructor not the style
